| Three-Step Sparring This introduction to partner work teaches us many things, including correct facing, correct positioning, the use of the correct blocking tool, body shifting, forearm conditioning, focus, timing and balance. For further info on three-step sparring consult Training Manual One: Fundamental Tae Kwon-Do (c) The following slideshows show the three-step sparring required for gradings: 10th Kup - 1 only 9th Kup - 1 and 2 8th Kup 1 to 3 7th Kup 1 to 5 6th Kup 1 to 7 5th Kup and above - all 10  Measure: Only one student in a pair needs to measure. Form a complete walking stance placing the ball of the right foot to the outside of the partners ball of the left foot. Only one measure is performed for each bout of three-step.
1. Step back with the right foot, walking stance, middle inner forearm block (3 times). Counter with a reverse punch in walking stance.
2. Step back with the left foot, L-stance, middle inner forearm block (3 times). Counter by stepping the right foot to the outside of your partners right foot, landing in sitting stance and executing a middle outward knifehand strike to the neck or floating ribs.
3. Step back with the right foot, L-stance, middle outer forearm block (3 times). Counter by stepping the right foot 450 forwards, landing in sitting stance, right forefist punch, followed by a left forefist punch.
4. Step back with the left foot, L-stance, inwards outer forearm block (3 times). Counter by sliding the front foot to form a walking stance, executing a right backfist strike to the partners right temple.
5. Step back with the right foot, L-stance, middle knifehand guarding block (2 times). On the 3rd step, move the right foot 45o to the right and forwards to form a sitting stance, executing a middle knifehand block with the left hand and a simultaneous high punch (to the philtrum) with the right forefist.
6. Step back with the left foot, L-stance, middle inwards palm block (3 times). Counter by pivoting on the right foot, spinning anti-clockwise, to form a sitting stance (facing away from your partner), executing a left back elbow thrust.
7. Step back with the right foot, L-stance, middle single knifehand block (3 times - on the 3rd move step back and to the right to the 45o angle). Counter with a left (front leg) front snap kick to the solar plexus or sternum, landing in walking stance with a left forefist punch, followed by a right forefist punch.
8. Step back with the right foot, L-stance, middle forearm guarding block (3 times - on the 3rd move step back and to the right to the 45o angle). Counter with a left (front leg) side piercing kick to the sternum or philtrum.
9. Step back with the right foot, L-stance, middle forearm guarding block (3 times - on the 3rd move step back and to the right to the 45o angle). Counter with a left (front leg) turning kick to the floating ribs/kidneys (lower right side of your partner), spot then execute a right side piercing kick to the floating ribs/solar plexus (lower right front of your partner).
10. Step back with the left foot, L-stance, middle knifehand guarding block (3 times - on the 3rd move step back and to the left to the 45o angle). Counter with a right (front leg) turning kick to the sternum, spot then execute a left reverse turning kick to the sternum, landing in an L-stance with a knifehand guarding block. | |
