My First Tae Kwon-Do Lesson

The very first lesson can be daunting for some.  I can still remember my first lesson back on 31st October 1991.  I didn't have a clue what the Korean commands were so at times the entire class would turn to face me (as a beginner I was in the back row), which was uncomfortable.  I soon learnt though that all of these students had had their own first lesson at some point in the past and fully understood what it's like to start a martial art.  My only advice is, accept that you're a complete beginner and try to remember the exciting and rewarding journey that you've just embarked upon!
Liam Broderick, Chief Instructor, 2009

What should I wear?
You will need to wear loose clothing, T-shirt, jogging bottoms, shorts etc.  We train in bare feet.

What do I need to bring with me?
The only thing that you would probably need is water to drink, which is recommended for all students.  If you have any medical requirements please speak to the Instructor.

Do I need to pay or sign anything?
The first month is completely free and there are never any contracts to sign.  You will need to sign a licence application form before you start training.  This gives you student to student liability insurance.  You do not need to purchase a licence unless you decide to stay training after your trial period.

What will I do on my first lesson?
This will vary.  Most of the martial arts training is copying and repetition - one of the most efficient ways that a human learns.  You will always perform a warm-up at the start of each class and for the first few sessions just follow on as best you can.  During the class you may be assigned to a black belt instructor to run you through Tae Kwon-Do techniques and routines.
