Brother and Sister gain new Dan grades - 12th October 2008

Brother and sister, Guy and Claire Tullett were successful in gaining Tae Kwon-Do black belt grades following vigorous testing on Sunday 12th October in Derby.

Liam Broderick, the Instructor of the Academy has a long history of environmental work and states, ‘I work as an Ecologist for the Environment Agency here in Cornwall and I’m firmly committed to improving the local environment. It is great for me to be able to combine my love for the Cornish countryside with the martial arts I’ve dedicated so much of my life to. Tae Kwon-Do students that train in its native Korea are expected to give back to their local community in a number of ways such as litter picks, river and park clean-ups and helping the elderly. I’m delighted that my students from the Truro Academy have honoured this tradition and been able to give back to their local community in such a positive way and I thank them all for their dedication and hard work’.

This event, hosted for the first time by Global Taekwondo International, saw hundreds of competitors from each of the four UK nations; England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, plus our Cornish squad compete for medals in both traditional patterns and modern competitive sparring divisions. Cornwall fielded twenty competitors who took twenty medals, a truly stunning result. Danny Broderick, Area Rep for GTI Southwest Region states, ‘Cornwall Tae Kwon-Do has a long history of competition success and continues to produce some of the finest competitors in the UK and the Instructors across the County are very proud of their students’ achievements. Our youngest competitor was only six years old and the oldest fifty-four and five families competed on the day, a testament to Tae Kwon-Do’s appeal to such a wide range of ages and abilities. As we continue to provide excellent training at the lowest fee rates in Cornwall we hope to improve on our successes and ensure that Cornwall remains at the top of the UK’s Tae Kwon-Do.’

We raise over £1,000 for BBC Children in Need at the Cornish Championships - 11 Nov 07
Tae Kwon-Do students from across Cornwall joined forces to raise £1,088 for BBC Children in Need at the Cornish Tae Kwon-Do Championships 2007.

This friendly competition was held at Truro Leisure Centre on Sunday 11th November and included sixty martial artists from Camborne, Redruth, Helston, Newquay, St Austell, Truro, Wadebridge and many other towns and villages across Cornwall. The students were competing for medals in both sparring and patterns divisions and each Tae Kwon-Do school was battling it out for the coveted Cornish shield, awarded annually. It was an extremely close-run race with Camborne and Newquay drawn on 31 points each but the shield was eventually awarded to Camborne as they received one more gold medal!

The organiser of the event, Liam Broderick, a 3rd degree black belt who teaches at Truro Tae Kwon-Do Academy was delighted with the success of the competition, stating “we started the day with a minutes silence in honour of Remembrance Sunday and all those that have given so much for us all and every student also took the Tae Kwon-Do oath, reaffirming themselves to the peaceful, moral and respectful ideals of the martial arts. And the main competition itself was a delight to watch, with an excellent display of the dynamic Korean martial art famed for its high kicks and aerial techniques, using non-contact sparring that emphasises control and finesse rather than power or aggression. But more importantly, students worked hard to make this a successful and fun day, raising a significant amount for Children in Need. I would like to thank all the students involved for their courtesy and perseverance and for raising so much in sponsorship, Christine and Geoff Brown and family for providing the first aid and competition support for free, Patricia Finney for catering to raise money for Children in Need and Truro Leisure Centre, for their gracious reduction in costs for the facilities for the entire day.”

Cornwall Tae Kwon-Do was established in 1974 and provides both traditional and modern martial arts training suitable for all abilities from age 6 upwards. They are part of Global Tae Kwon-Do International and each school guarantees to offer the lowest training fees in the local area, with professional instructors averaging over 20 years experience each. Sunday 5th Aug 2007 - Cornwall Tae Kwon-Do supports Newquay Lifeboat Day 2007
Over fifty Tae Kwon-Do students from across Cornwall joined together to support the RNLI’s Lifeboat Day at Newquay Harbour on Sunday 5th August. There were representatives from Tae Kwon-Do schools in Camborne, Newquay, St Austell, Truro and Wadebridge, putting on a dramatic demonstration of this dynamic Korean martial art, which is famous for its spectacular high kicks and aerial techniques. Students performed traditional Tae Kwon-Do techniques with modern self-defence moves in front of thousands of spectators, who also got to see the power of the art as students of all ages broke wooden boards and roofing tiles with a variety of Tae Kwon-Do kicks, strikes and punches.

Danny Broderick, the representative for Tae Kwon-Do in Cornwall and the south-west, who is also a well known gig rower at Newquay Harbour was delighted with how the demo went and stated, ‘I would like to thank the RNLI for giving us the opportunity to join them on this special day to help them raise funds for such a worthwhile cause. Tae Kwon-Do in Cornwall was originally established at RAF St Mawgan in 1969, and I was lucky to have been able to join that school in 1974, so Newquay has a very strong tradition of Tae Kwon-Do training. It’s not uncommon to see us training on the beaches all around Cornwall during the summer months but its rare to perform in front of such a large audience. I would sincerely like to thank all the students who attended this event and I hope that we can work closely with the RNLI in future events to help make our coastline a safer place for all.’

Tuesday 26th June 2007 - Outstanding success at the June grading
Nine students were submitted to grade under Master Harrison VII Dan on Tuesday 26th June. Out of those nine, five gained A-level pass rates and two achieved plus passes. This is an outstanding result for the school and means that overall we have a 66% A-level pass rate since the school was founded. This makes us one of the most succesful schools in the UK.

As your Instructor, I would like you to know how proud I am of each and every one of you. Your hard work and dedication to your training is amongst the best that I have ever seen in my 16 years in Tae Kwon-Do and I must commend and congratulate you. I would also like to thank Mrs Finney, Mr Edwards and Mr Fouracre for their support and dedication in their role as Assistant Instructors. Thanks to you all and keep up the good work!

Sunday 20th May 2007 - Nigel promoted to 2nd Dan
Nigel Fouracre, a Truro Tae Kwon-Do student has been promoted to 2nd degree black belt after successfully completing a black belt grading in Derby on 20th May.

Nigel was born with the conditions aphasia and apraxia, which cause speech, language and physical problems. As a child, he was sent to a boarding school for children with learning difficulties and it was there that he found an interest in the martial arts, initially in Karate before progressing on to Tae Kwon-Do. The martial arts have helped Nigel to improve his physical co-ordination and memory and to gain a high level of control over his conditions. He has trained to become an Instructor and a competition Umpire and Referee and is a champion fighter in his own right, a remarkable achievement for someone with aphasia and apraxia. Nigel states that his main aim in Tae Kwon-Do is to improve the happiness and confidence of those students who he teaches and to help them reach their full potential.

Nigel’s Instructor, Liam Broderick is extremely proud of his newest 2nd Dan, stating, ‘Nigel is a true martial artist, role modelling the courtesy, respect, dedication and perseverance that should be inherent to a Tae Kwon-Do black belt. He is a hard working and friendly student, who is always great fun to be around. In overcoming his learning difficulties, he displays a strength of character that never fails to impress me.’

Sunday 15th April 2007 - Cornwall's English Champions

Danny Broderick, the Camborne Instructor and Area Representative for Tae Kwon-Do in the South-West of England was delighted with the turn out, stating ‘it is a very brave thing to do, to turn up on a Cornish beach in midwinter, bare foot, wearing only a martial arts training suit, to train for an hour and then dive into the Atlantic Ocean without a wetsuit! I commend all those involved for their dedication to this annual tradition and their commitment to their Art. 2006 has been a great year for Tae Kwon-Do in Cornwall and we are looking forward to an even better one in 2007. I would like to thank all of the students who attended and also send a great big thank you to the Blue Reef Aquarium who supported this event once again this year. Sunday 11th April 2006 - Truro's Clean Sweep!
On Sunday 11th June the students of Truro Tae Kwon-Do Academy performed a beach clean on Chapel Porth beach, near St Agnes in recognition of the United Nations World Environment Day 2006.

The students, who practice this popular Korean Art of Self-Defence, were blessed with glorious sunshine as they cleaned the beach of car loads of plastic, foam and netting which had recently been washed ashore. After the beach clean, they put on a great show for the beach goers and surfers, performing an hour-long training session which ended in the sea.

The Instructor of the school, Liam Broderick, a 3rd Degree Black Belt who has been teaching Tae Kwon-Do for 13 years was delighted with the day on Chapel Porth and stated, “I am thrilled with the success of the beach clean on Chapel Porth, which came about through a pledge I made for World Environment Day via my work as an Ecologist for the Environment Agency. I had decided that I wanted to get my Tae Kwon-Do students involved in a community-based project, which would be a normal part of their commitment in Tae Kwon-Do if they were learning this martial art in the Far-East. I put a number of ideas to them and was most pleased when they chose to perform the beach clean on Chapel Porth. As this also coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the National Trust taking over the management of this beautiful Cornish cove, we all feel that the location was perfect. I would like to thank all of those who took part, including students from Truro and Camborne Tae Kwon-Do schools and would also like to wish all the best to the National Trust for their upcoming 50th Anniversary celebrations at Chapel Porth.”

The United Nations World Environment Day 2006, which was held on 6th June has helped to make people more aware of environmental issues and has encouraged them to make changes to their daily life, and in doing so improve our environment. You can still get involved and ‘promise the Earth’ by contacting the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506 or visiting
